Rackspace Review

RackspaceSign Up Now!In 2005 Mosso.com, which is a Rackspace Venture, started offering Cloud services for $100/mo. Its talented technicians worked successfully towards building massive distributed storage space. In 2008 Slicehost and JungleDisk joined Mosso.com and distinguished the Cloud strategy of Rackspace. In 2009 the collective name RackSpaceCloud for all RackSpace Cloud-related products was born and started its success story on the web. RackSpace already has 40.000 Cloud customers – from startup companies to Fortune 500 corporations.

If you decide to use RackSpaceCloud for your website or project, you can choose between three different Cloud product shortly described here:

  • Cloud servers – provides servers on demand, easy customizable and manageable, with root access and Fanatical support.
  • Cloud sites – website hosting platform which is quickly and easily scalable and offers reliability, security and high speed.
  • Cloud files – offers unlimited file storage with an easy-to-use Control Panel.

Here we will concentrate on the Cloud sites offer. With Cloud sites by RackSpaceCloud you can choose between two different operating systems. You can have Linux or Windows (additional monthly payment required), or also have them both if your applications require it. You get the Linux server included for free in the package – this fits best with our idea to find an easy affordable Cloud hosting, so we will take a closer look at this one. The Linux server has PHP v5.2 and MySQL v5, and Mod Rewrite is enabled. You get a web-based Control Panel, you can run cron jobs and you have secure FTP. With RackSpaceCloud you get white-label Nameservers, that you can change as you wish. You can easily manage your DNS online and also run your own DNS.

For $149 per month you get 50 GB space, 500 GB bandwidth, 10.000 compute cycles per month and free software such as Joomla, WordPress, osCommerce to create websites. If you require additional resources, you can add space for 50 cents per GB, bandwidth for 22 cents per GB and additional compute cycles for 1 cent per compute cycle.

From the reviews about RackSpaceCloud on the web we have come to the conclusion, that the web hosting company has very good and prompt technical support. The initial setup is a little bit hard for newcomers, but after all is setup up, the cloud usage runs smoothly without outages and issues.
