What is a domain name?

The domain name is the address on the web, where your website will be accessible at. It is the online identity of your business or private website. It is important to choose a name that is unique, easy to remember and describes your website content as good as possible. You register your domain name through a registrar. It is possible to pay for an year, or a longer period. If you don’t want to loose your domain name you must renew it when it is close to expiration, or else it could be claimed by someone else.

There are different domain name extension. The most common are: .com, .net, .org, .info. There are also country specific extensions such as .us for the Untited Stated, .de for Germany or .ca for Canada. For some of these extension there are requirements to be fulfilled such as citizenship of the according country in order to be able to buy the domain.

The are some rules you have to follow when choosing a domain name. For example you cannot include dots, commas or semicolons or other special characters in your domain name. You can use letters and numbers, as well as slashes.
When registering a domain name, it is adviseable to register the same domain with different extensions, so you are sure that noone will use it and make money thanks to your marketing efforts and popularity.

The first thing that people see when visiting your website is the design. You have to choose an appealing template with a good navigation for your site. There are several ways you can go.

1. The easiest way is to use a ready-made template. You can find many free and/or paid galleries on the web from where to choose your template. If you get a free template, the posibility is high, that this template is used by other websites as well. If you can afford to buy a template, it will be exclusively for you. When you get the template you only have to insert your content and you are ready to go.

2. The next option is to use a Site Builder or Site Creator tool. With this tool you won’t need any html knowledge. These tools usually have an easy interface and drag-and-drop editor. The most web hosting providers have pre-installed Website builders with their accounts.

3. You can create a template for your website by yourself. You will need a software such as DreamWeaver. In this case you need html and css knowledge.
